Author: Linda Castillo

Publisher: Minotaur Books

Pages: 320

Release Date: July 9, 2024

Genre: Police Procedurals/Women Sleuths

Book Description:

Chief of Police Kate Burkholder investigates a gruesome murder that reveals a little-known chapter of early Amish history in this next riveting installment of the bestselling series by Linda Castillo.

Newlywed Chief of Police Kate Burkholder is awakened by an urgent midnight call summoning her to a suspicious fire in the woods. When she arrives at the scene, she discovers a charred body. According to the coroner, the deceased, an Amish man named Milan Swanz, was chained to a stake and burned alive. It is an appalling and eerily symbolic crime against an upstanding husband and father.

Kate knows all too well that the Amish prefer to handle their problems without interference from the outside world, and no one will speak about the murdered man. From what she’s able to piece together, Swanz led a deeply troubled life and had recently been excommunicated. But if that’s the case, why are the Amish so reluctant to talk about him? Are they protecting the memory of one of their own? Or are they afraid of something they dare not share?

When her own brother is implicated in the case, Kate finds herself not only at odds with the Amish, the world of which she was once a part, but also the English community and her counterparts in law enforcement. The investigation takes a violent turn when Kate’s life is threatened by a mysterious stranger.

To uncover the truth about the death of Milan Swanz, Kate must dive deep into the Anabaptist culture, peering into all the dark corners of its history, only to uncover a secret legacy that shatters everything she thought she knew about the Amish themselves—and her own roots.

My Thoughts: Riveting

You know that once you begin reading one of author Linda Castillo's books, you are going to get hooked right from the first page. And The Burning is no exception.

It is riveting and suspenseful all the way through. Once I started reading, I could not put it down until I got to the very end. It had me sitting on the edge of my seat, holding my breath, and guessing who had done it up to the very end.

The discoveries Kate made and the connections to them made the story even more compelling and intriguing. It is a total page-turner, and although it includes some pretty gruesome descriptions and obscenities, none of them are overdone. It is an absolute must-read.

The Amish Quiltmaker's Uninvited Guest by Jennifer Beckstrand

Book Details:

Title: The Amish Quiltmaker's Uninvited Guest

Series: The Amish Quiltmaker Book 5

Author: Jennifer Beckstrand

Publisher: Zebra Books

Pages: 286

Release Date: June 25, 2024

Genre: Amish Romance

Book Description:

Even with her thriving quilt shop and baby-on-the-way, Colorado Amish quiltmaker Esther Kiem always has time for matchmaking—even when it comes to her frustratingly exacting distant cousin!

Infused with her signature humor and saturated with heart, award-winning, USA Today bestselling author Jennifer Beckstrand blends quilting, mischief, and matchmaking for the fifth Amish Quiltmaker romanceperfect for fans of Amy Clipston, Wanda Brunstetter, and Linda Byler.

Esther’s distant cousin, widower Menno Eicher, needs to be hard-headed and practical. Swamped by family and farm responsibilities, he must find the perfect wife as quickly as possible, so he’s shown up in Colorado—with “finding a wife” on his To-Do list! Esther’s community has many women who could match his ever-growing requirements. Still, after a chance meeting, Menno keeps coming back to baker Joanna Yoder. Hard-working, honest, and forthright, she’s distracting Menno from his search, opening his heart—yet refuses to believe he’s falling hopelessly in love with
her . . .

Happily busy inventing and selling delicious desserts, Joanna has no time for someone as ridiculously exacting as Menno. After all, what sort of man thinks choosing a wife is like picking a pie at the general store? But she soon sees the surprisingly kind heart, doting father, and understanding man beneath his hard-to-please ways. With faith and genuine love, might the few things they have in common overcome the differences between them—and prove precious enough to risk a future together?

My Thoughts: First Impressions Aren't Always Accurate

Joanna Yoder's first impressions of Menno Eicher weren't very favorable. As far as she was concerned, a man who makes a list that includes "finding a wife" doesn't rank very high on her list.

Menno is a very practical and obedient person, hence his to-do list. But his practical side sometimes gets in the way of what his heart is telling him.

And that is where Joanna and Menno's tug of war begins. Their story includes a lot of back-and-forth banter and some amusing occurrences. These include contributions by delightful children, some fun animals, and some well-meaning friends. All of this had me laughing and smiling more than once. It was often frustrating to watch Joanna wrestle with the fact that first impressions aren't always accurate, especially in matters of the heart. But following Menno's path to finding what was there all along was an absolute joy to see. It's a beautiful story that will truly touch your heart.

A Murder for the Sages (Sunflower Café Mysteries Book 3) by Amy Lillard

Book Details:

Title: A Murder fot the Sages

Series: Sunflower Café Mysteries Book 3

Author: Amy Lillard

Publisher: Kensington Cozies

Pages: 250

Release Date: June 25, 2024

Genre: Cozy Culinary Mysteries

Book Description:

Twenty-something advice columnist and amateur sleuth Sissy Yoder loves helping out at her Aunt Bethel’s Sunflower Café in Yoder, Kansas. It connects her to family, to the close-knit community—and to the suspicious events that always seem to bubble beneath small-town life . . .

The unusual death of local herb farmer, Ginger Reed, is the talk of Yoder. Naturally, Sissy is intrigued. The official report classifies Ginger’s demise as an accident, concluding that she ran herself over with a tractor. But Sissy’s cousin, Naomi, a friend and longtime employee of Ginger’s, insists that’s impossible. When she asks for Sissy’s help in unearthing the truth, Sissy’s on the case—accompanied as ever by her loyal Yorkie companion, Duke.

The deeper Sissy digs, the longer the list of suspects grows—and none of them are Ginger. Near the top is Ginger’s resentful sister-in-law, Mallory. Next is Naomi’s brother, Lloyd, who’s bitter about the oil derrick presumably pumping black gold from Ginger’s land—land that once belonged to his family. Naomi herself could be a suspect—it’s her tractor, after all. But the investigation stalls when Naomi makes a shocking turnaround in her story. Is she lying? And if so, why? Then a missing dog, a desperate lawyer, and a teenage con artist are added to the mix, and the puzzle becomes hopelessly complicated. If Sissy doesn’t solve it quickly, she’ll be lost in the weeds as a killer reaps a deadly harvest . . .

My Thoughts: Such a Fun Read

Small town life in Yoder, Kansas, is just that—small town life. Everyone knows everyone. So what can possibly go wrong? Well, that becomes a myth when Ginger Reed winds up dead. This leads to more questions than answers, which include quite a lengthy list of suspects.

So what's a person to do when your friend asks you to please find out what really happened? Sissy just can't say no, and that's where the mystery begins. Sissy, her faithful Yorkie, Duke, her "we're only friends" friend, Gavin, and a host of others work together to get to the bottom of the story.

I was kept on the edge of my seat, guessing who had done it the entire time. The mixture of mystery, romance, and quirky characters made it such a fun read. And when you add Aunt Bess's words of wisdom throughout, you truly have a real winner of a story!

Their Unlikely Amish Courtship by Cathy Liggett

Book Details:

Title: Their Unlikely Amish Courtship

Author: Cathy Liggett

Publisher: Love Inspirred

Pages: 207

Release Date: April 23, 2024

Genre: Amish Eomance

Book Description:

A fake arrangement

For the sake of a child

No one in Sugarcreek, Ohio, can believe that charming Benjamin Byler and standoffish Miriam Schrock are dating—and they’d be right. But the Amish bachelor needs the fake courtship to prove he can care for his orphaned niece. Now the mismatched couple must convince their community they’re truly in love. Except Miriam is more caring and beautiful than Benjamin thought, and he might be in danger of falling for his own charade…

My Thoughts: A Delightful Story

Benjamin and Miriam have known each other for years, but they don't really know each other. So, when Benjamin asks if he could court her, Miriam thinks that he has surely lost his mind. And since their personalities are like night and day, who would even believe that they are a couple? But they decide to put their differences aside for the sake of one lovely little girl who has suffered a great loss and is struggling to recover.

Although Ben and Miriam's journey begins as a fake relationship, the waters soon become murky. Spending more time together and having conversations that are sometimes sweet and sometimes entertaining results in a relationship that blossoms into so much more. Their story involves loss, love, and healing, and when you put it all together, it is a story that is a delight to read.
