Pages: 352

Release Date: March 28, 2023

Genre:  Amish Romance

Book Description:

Joy Lehman has pressed on faithfully since losing her husband, raising their children and running a thriving bakery alone. Even caring for her oldest son, Johnny—seriously injured after a fall—has not shaken her fierce independence. Johnny will walk again, she’s sure. Until then, a meeting of the Widows’ Club at her home makes it clear that Joy must consider some costly renovations. Her brother-in-law, Uriah, is happy to provide the lumber and the labor—if Joy will accept his help.

Uriah understands family challenges—he’s a widower himself, and father to four daughters. Yet he can see that Joy’s struggle lies deeper than house repairs, in learning to accept an altered future for her son. As Uriah’s daughters begin helping in the bakery, and Joy and Uriah’s bond grows deeper, a new possibility glows bright—the unexpected happiness that lies in embracing one strong, united family, filled with support and love . . .

My Thoughts:  Great Read

Widow Joy Lehman and widower Uriah Lehman have much in common. Each has four children, has experienced the loss of a spouse, faces the demands of running a  business and deals with the challenges of being a single parent. Add to that the fact that they are in-laws related through their spouses, and you have quite an interesting mix.

Joy's son, Johnny B, suffered an accident that resulted in severely limiting his mobility. As Uriah comes to the realization of the difficulties that this is causing Joy and the family, he quickly steps up to help. It's a rocky start but results in their families spending more time together. Their family time in turn sparks some very interesting reactions from the characters. It even resulted in some of them resorting to planning and plotting, which caused me to smile and laugh on more than one occasion. Watching Joy and Uriah journeying through their trials and seeking God's will more deeply in their lives and in their relationship was beautiful and inspiring. It deeply touched my heart and kept me glued to the story wondering how it would all come together.

One More Time for Joy is a beautiful story of faith, hope, family, second chances, and overcoming wrapped up in an Amish romance. It is also a truly great read that I highly recommend.

Children's Mathematics, Second Edition: Cognitively Guided Instruction 2nd Edition by Thomas P. Carpenter, Elizabeth Fennema, Megan Loef Franke, Linda Levi & Susan B. Empson

Book Details:

Title: Children's Mathematics, Second Edition: Cognitively Guided                    Instruction 2nd Edition

Authors: Thomas P. Carpenter, Elizabeth Fennema, Megan Loef                         Franke, Linda Levi & Susan B. Empson

Publisher: Heinemann; 2nd edition

Pages: 240

Release Date:

Genre: Math Teaching Materials

Book Description:

The bestselling first edition of Children's Mathematics helped hundreds of thousands of teachers understand children's intuitive mathematical thinking and use that knowledge to help children learn mathematics with understanding. The highly anticipated Second Edition provides new insights about Cognitively Guided Instruction based on the authors' research and experience in CGI classrooms over the last 15 years. Highlights include:

  • how children solve problems using their intuitive understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
  • the development of children's mathematical thinking throughout the primary grades
  • instructional practices that promote children's active engagement in mathematics
  • connections between children's strategies and powerful mathematical concepts

A new expanded collection of over 90 online video episodes illustrating children's mathematical thinking, interactions between students and teachers, and classroom instruction that builds on children's mathematical thinking.

Together, the Second Edition and videos provide a detailed research-based account of the development of children's mathematical thinking and problem solving, and how teachers can promote this development in ways that honor children's thinking.

My Thoughts: Great Resource

This is a very good resource for teachers or future teachers. One of the many things I found helpful is the explanation of the different strategies children use to solve problems and how the wording of the problem impacts the strategy used. The reflection questions that some of the chapters included were another thing I found helpful. However, most helpful of all were the many video clips. They really give good insight into the thinking and strategies the students use to solve problems. Listening to them explain their thinking, as well as listening to the instructor ask questions that assists the students in expressing their thought processes, were extremely helpful. It really drives home the importance of observing the student,  listening to them express their thinking, and using what you glean from that to impact your instruction.

While I found this to be a very helpful tool for educators, in my humble opinion, I would not recommend it to homeschool parents. The terminology used is very textbookish and could be somewhat daunting for one who is not used to that type of terminology. I would also caution those who work with English Language Learner (ELL) students. While math is a fairly universal language, one must be aware of what country the ELL student is from. This makes a difference when the student is from a country where math procedures are not the same as what most consider the norm. That being said, recommendations in this book are still helpful for ELLs, but with modifications.

Her Amish Country Valentine: A Clean and Uplifting Romance (The Butternut Amish B&B, 1) by Patricia Johns

Book Details:

Title: Her Amish Country Valentine

Series: The Butternut Amish B&B Book 1

Author: Patricia Johns

Publisher: Harlequin Heartwarming

Pages: 262

Release Date: March 28, 2023

Genre: Amish Romance/Small Town & Rural Fiction

Book Description:

Can a wedding-date deception
Become true love?

Tired of being seen as a lonely workaholic, advertising exec Jill Wickey promises to bring her “casual boyfriend” to her sister’s Valentine’s wedding. Too bad he doesn’t exist! Then Thom Miller, a carpenter working at her aunt’s Amish B&B, offers to be Jill’s fake boyfriend—
if they turn the lie into truth. But dating Thom in idyllic Amish country makes Jill wish their temporary arrangement could last…

My Thoughts: Beautiful Story

What could a big city workaholic, Jill Wickey, and a small town carpenter, Thom Miller, possibly have in common? At first glance, it seems there is absolutely nothing. However, an upcoming wedding and past heartbreaks could just be the common factors, and those are about to change everything.

I loved this endearing story of two people who have known heartache, have known what it feels like to have people constantly trying to fix your love life, who work hard at guarding their hearts, and yet deep down, all they want is a future with that someone special.  Those elements, along with how they were able to open up to each other with complete truth and vulnerability, helped transform Jill and Thom's "fake" relationship into something more. It touched my heart deeply and kept me riveted to the pages.

Patricia Johns has once again written a delightful story with wonderful characters where you can't help but be completely drawn in. She also adds some interesting and amusing secondary characters that compliment the story without taking the focus off of the main characters. This combination is what makes Her Amish Country Valentine a beautiful story that I highly recommend.
